Essential Questions: 

  • How have sports shaped and fostered change throughout the history of our society? 

  • What inequalities and injustices persist in sport and how can we combat these?

  • How can we use sport to promote opportunity, equality, & justice in our community?

       In this project, after exploring the origins of sport, students examined the ways in which games and sport intersect and often collide with race, gender, education, and ability. Students worked on argumentation and had the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of the positives and negatives that accompany the national sport's community as well as athletics worldwide. After investigating the many ways in which sports can bring people together and make a lasting impact on our society, as well as how sports can consume people’s lives and how institutional discrimination can oppress and dehumanize athletes today, students partnered with a nonprofit organization, interviewing members, organizing fundraisers, and presenting their discoveries in our final exhibition:
