Through the Lens of Self

Essential Questions:

  • How does your personal lens affect the way in which you understand the world around you?

  • How can this lens serve as a filter, a barrier, or a window into the experience of others?

To begin the 10th grade year, students explored, analyzed, and investigated the ways in which writers use literary tools and make purposeful choices as they craft personal essays in order to reveal internal qualities and to bridge the differences between themselves and their readers.

After collecting a variety of memories and examining their beliefs and values, students were tasked with creating a personal memoir that presented a clear message about the ways in which their understanding of the world has been shaped by their lived experience.

Lastly, in collaboration with engineering instructor, Phil Estrada, students learned the art of laser cutting, spending time working in Adobe Illustrator, drafting and creating designs, before laser cutting and painting their final "lenses" through which they viewed the world (see above).
